IT MIGHT SEND YOU ALONG A FOOTPATH
WHICH IS UNSUITABLE FOR VEHICLES
PLEASE TAKE THE ROAD    THROUGH THE GOLF COURSE
AND APPROACH FROM EAST!

Drive all the way through Stromness – to start with, follow the signs to ‘Ness’ and the campsite. Don’t drive through the campsite – no access for vehicles that way, footpath only. Turn into the golf course and go past the clubhouse – marked ‘Private Road’, but the golf club very kindly allow access. Please take extra care here – golfers playing across the road!
When you reach the sea turn right along the shore, drive along the single track for about 1km, past the remains of Links Battery, until the track terminates at a wide turning bay by the Ness Battery information boards. Your guide will meet you there.
There is a small parking area by the entrance gate which you may use if you have mobility problems and wish to avoid the slope up from the car parking area and your tour guide will meet you at the gate – please call to let us know if planning this.

On foot

From the South End of Stromness, walk through the campsite to the Point of Ness.  Follow the path along the shore for about 1km, past Links Battery, until you reach the wide tarmac parking area at the end of the road. Your guide will meet you there.

Please bear in mind Ness Battery is about 1.5 miles (2.5km) from the ferry terminal/information centre at the north end of Stromness – and still 1 mile (1.6km) from Stromness Museum. So please allow plenty of time to get there – at least 35-40 mins from the ferry terminal/information centre.

Access

Most of the site is accessible for all, with care, but there are some parts of the site with which some visitors may have difficulty. Please contact us with any queries you have regarding safe access.
Most of the tour takes place outdoors and the site is very exposed to the elements, so please bear this in mind – even it seems calm and warm in Stromness, around the corner at Ness Battery it can be very different!
